Lagos, Nigeria – Architect, sustainability strategist, and artist Morohunmubo Olayemi Afolabi is presenting her solo exhibition, "Earth is the Answer," at AMG Projects in Lagos. Running from September 28 to October 19 , the exhibition is described as a powerful exploration of environmental memory, built space, and planetary care.

More than a collection of artworks, "Earth is the Answer" serves as "an invitation to listen differently—to recognise the earth not as a passive site, but as a speaker, witness, and collaborator". Afolabi, who brings over 25 years of international experience to her practice , uses paintings and installations to meditate on the tension between human development and the living world.

The Art of Urgency and Possibility

Afolabi's work translates the effects of climate change into a visual language that is both poetic and urgent. Drawing from architectural precision and ecological imagination , her compositions feature textures of stone, coastlines, sky, and constructed environments. These pieces function as "maps of possibility," tracing the delicate balance between what has been built and what must be preserved.

Specific forms and colours reappear as echoes of memory. Blues evoke oceans under threat, while earthen tones gesture toward both depletion and renewal. Curator Hannah Remi Okoja notes that Afolabi "paints with the sensibility of an architect and the urgency of a sustainability advocate".

The exhibition, however, consciously refuses despair. It positions Afolabi's artistic voice within a broader movement that sees sustainability as a cultural and imaginative necessity, not just a technical one—something that requires collective resolve and care.

Technique and Background

Afolabi is an ambidextrous artist who paints with her left hand, bringing a distinct physicality and rhythm to her practice. Her pieces are created on canvas or clay, utilizing collage, oil paint, and acrylic in a watercolour-like manner.

A member of RIBA, the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Institute of Architects , Afolabi is currently the Head of Partnerships and Engagements at the Green Building Council of Nigeria. She is also a certified EDGE expert influencing ESG strategies in the built environment. Her extensive professional career includes roles with firms like Shepard Robson Architects and Johnson Controls UK, managing projects for clients such as IBM, BP Amoco, and the BBC.

Her work is part of the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art collection , and her current installation on climate change is featured at the ECOBANK Design and Build Week. She studied architecture at the University for the Creative Arts and the Inchbald School of Interior Design in the UK.

The exhibition is curated by AMG Projects and can be seen at 24 Rasheed Alaba Williams, Lekki Phase One, Lagos.
