How the Spirit-Level Joke in Clarissa Was Built

The mosaic at the centre of the spirit-level joke in Clarissa was never described in the script. “In the script, it just says mosaic,” the directors Arie and Chuko Esiri told Art Report Africa. Their production designer created it and had it fabricated for the film: a circular piece in shades of brown, made to look visibly crooked, with spaces left for the spirit level to sit against it. The scene was largely performed as written. But in rehearsal, the actor who plays Joseph, the handyman, began shaking the spirit level. “We thought that was absolutely brilliant,” the brothers said. The same thinking shaped the rest of the house. The brothers decided that Clarissa, played by Sophie Okonedo, had chosen and decorated it herself, so its art and furniture had to be hers. Wanting rooms that felt lived in rather than “plastic”, the team visited the homes of relatives and family friends, photographed pieces they liked and borrowed chairs, carpets and a vanity table. The result is a house of curated taste, which makes a sloppy installation all the more maddening for Clarissa, on the eve of her party. The film’s look is deliberately classical. Crossfades borrowed from films of the 1950s and ’60s give Clarissa what the brothers call a “timeless” quality and a sense of nostalgia, and they name Edward Yang and Michelangelo Antonioni among their references.
Clarissa, which premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in May, screens at the BFI London Film Festival, which closes on 18 October. Neon releases it in US cinemas on 11 December.
